Wanted: Sage Grouse

Sage GrouseSage GrouseI just had to laugh when I read the article on the negative impact the renewable energy industry is having on the Sage Grouse in Nevada in Las Vegas Sun http://bit.ly/dsdmhk this morning. Mind you, I'm not laughing at the impact to the Sage Grouse, I'm chuckling over the irony of the Sage Grouse issue and the Jungo Road Landfill project (did I mention I'd be blogging about that project?).

Jungo Road Landfill, Update, after 3/1/10 HCC Meeting

Well, this picture of me reflects my elation at the outcome of today's Humboldt County Commissioners' (HCC) meeting. The HCC voted 3-2 to hear the appeal from Bob Dolan and Massey Mayo to repeal the Regional Planning Commissions' decision on 2/11/10 to give Recology a 5-year extension on their conditional use permit(CUP) that is expiring in 4/10 after 3 years.Riding the recumbant, flying a kite,Jungo Road, 5/09Riding the recumbant, flying a kite,Jungo Road, 5/09

Jungo Road Landfill, Winnemucca, Nevada

Try to imagine: a landfill that would bring in 4000 tons of non-recycleable waste, 5 days a week, for 95 years via train from California, and grow into an unnatural mountain on Jungo Road, just outside of Winnemucca. Nope, that last sentence is not a typo. April, 2007, a conditional use permit (CUP)was granted by the Regional Planning Commission (RPC) in Winnemucca, to Recology to build this landfill.

Cruising down a two-lane blacktop where the Catlow Rim drops down into a broad valley of sagebrush and bunchgrass, ranch manager Stacy Davies pulls his pickup over to let pass a herd of young bulls being trailed along the road by a couple of his buckaroos, as ranch hands are called here.

Wildlife guzzlers -- contraptions that capture rainwater and melting snow in remote places for thirsty animals to drink -- have triggered a turf war between two Nevada resource agencies.

Little High Rock / SNPLMA nomination

Here are my thoughts on the SNPLMA nomination of John Estill's in-holdings in the Black Rock NCA.

Pop Sci: The Race to 1,000 MPH

By Mike Spinelli

Britain’s Richard Noble, the reigning king of land speed, is building a rocket on wheels to shatter his own record. The only problem: A ragtag American team might beat him to it.

The sun doesn’t rise over the Black Rock Desert in Nevada; it ignites. One minute the blaze-orange glow of dawn is cascading down the sulfur-rich Jackson and Kamma mountain ranges, tinting the prehistoric lakebed a million shades of pink. The next, it’s full celestial throttle. By 6:30, the sun is blinding and the heat is ratcheting up.

Cowboy horses on the Great Plains
There is still rugged terrain on the Great Plains only accessible by horseback

The traditions of America's cowboys are alive and well on the Great Plains despite modern technology encroaching on their way of life on the prairie, as Kevin Connolly found when he visited Montana and the Dakotas.
