Guru Road Restoration - DATES CHANGED 07/11/2009 9:00 am
07/12/2009 3:00 pm
Located alongside Hwy 34 on the edge of the Black Rock Desert and billed as the world’s only drive-thru folk art experience, Guru Rd. philosophically and humorously combines poetry and folk wisdom in a series of stone tablets, monuments, sculptures, and earthworks. Originally created in 1980 by a local character named Dwayne “Doobie” Williams, Guru Rd. was added to and expanded upon continuously until 1995 when Dwayne passed away. Admission is free and the site is open 24 hours per day, 365 days a year. In June of 2004, Guru Road (aka “Doobie Lane”) was partially covered by a rock slide from the East side of the Granite Range which resulted from a freak thunderstorm. This slide covered part of the historic road, and disrupted some of the installations there. In July of 2003, Matthew “Metric” Ebert organized a restoration effort with a crew of volunteers, and they cleared some of the road and worked on rebuilding and/or reinforcing the damaged installations. Since 2004 there has been an annual restoration project scheduled for July, and much of the original character of this local treasure has been restored over the past 5 years. We need volunteers to help with this project, so please come out and join the Friends of Black Rock in our 6th annual Guru Rd. Restoration! Volunteers will meet around 9 AM on Guru Rd. (a few miles outside of Gerlach) at the "Ground Zero" installation on the West end of Guru Rd. Lunch will be provided. Thank you for your help in preserving this fun and thoughtful piece of local history, and we look forward to seeing you out here!
