Dear Matthew,
The weather has been beautiful out in the Black Rock, and we've had our first taste of spring a bit early. We took a trip out to Trego Hot Springs, but decided that the wind was blowing too hard and the water was not quite hot enough. Better luck next time. Maybe this weekend...

Hot Spring Tour
David Book, Friends of Black Rock board member and Sierra Club trip
leader, will be conducting a hot spring tour this Saturday, March 8,
through Sunday, March 9. The group will meet in Gerlach at the FBRHR
office on Main Street at 9:30 am. First stop, John Fremont's Great
Boiling Spring. Since we were unable to secure permission to bring
people in to see Fly Geyser, David may bring people there to view it
through binoculars. Then to Planet X Pottery
for lunch at their picnic table, "Frog Pond," and overnight camping at
Trego. Call David at 775-843-6443 if you plan to attend.

Spring Kick-Off Party, Saturday, March 22
Come meet people who share your passion for the Black Rock Desert
region! Join us from 2 pm to 5 pm at the Great Basin Brewery, 846 Victorian Avenue in Sparks,
where we will be recognizing the efforts of some special volunteers,
conducting an NCA quiz show, promoting our events, signing up volunteers, and enjoying some
live music from the P.O.S. Band. Friends will provide some appetizers and a keg of beer to get things rolling. |
Black Rock Radio Update
On February 22, FBRHR applied for an equipment grant through the
National Telecommunications and Information Administration. Whether we are
awarded the grant or not, the process of completing the application has
led us to discover many engineering professionals willing to help us
with the project, and has helped us to define the parameters of the
project. We hope to broadcast to much of the Black Rock NCA while still
covering the communities of Gerlach and Empire and Rte. 447 in both
directions. This ambitious project will ultimately rely on support from
charitable contributions, regardless of funding from public sources. For
updates on project progress, please go here or contact the Friends office at 775-557-2900. |
Welcome FBRHR Volunteer Coordinator Michael "Crow" Black
FBRHR is pleased to announce that we now have a volunteer coordinator,
thanks to the support of the AmeriCorps VISTA program. Michael
"Crow" Black has been coming out to the Black Rock Desert for over 10
years, and has recently purchased property in Gerlach. Over the past
month he has been getting up-to-speed and attending training classes,
but he is now ready to hit the ground running. He will be expanding our
volunteer recruitment efforts, helping to manage the visitor contact trailer, and writing a comprehensive FBRHR volunteer manual. If
you would like to volunteer, or to wish him a warm welcome, contact
crow@blackrockdesert.org. |
