Dear Matthew,
April witnessed the whirwind tour of the Visitor Contact Trailer to 4 separate Earth Day events: the Cabela's Store in Reno, Reno Earth Day in Idlewild Park, Earth Day at UNR, and Truckee-Tahoe Earth Day at Squaw Valley. We raised over $900 to support our organization, and contacted thousands of people. Thanks
to all the volunteers who helped make this outreach possible, and to
United Rentals in Sparks for the donation of the truck. May is winding up to be similarly busy-- let's take a look.

Black Rock Rendezvous, May 24 - 26, 2008
A Weekend of Diversity and Celebration in the Black Rock Desert!
Please visit blackrockrendezvous.com
for the whole rundown of activities. Although the event is free, we
encourage attendees to become a member of the Friends of Black Rock
High Rock, and encourage donations for provided refreshments. You can
join online at shopblackrockdesert.org
The event provides a series of workshops and tours, with
a camp-out in the Black Rock Desert. We start in Gerlach on Saturday
morning, May 24, with an orientation, partner expo, and hosted
lunch. Then Saturday afternoon there are tours, including Guru Road,
Fly Geyser, Black Rock Point, and a petroglyph site. Unfortunately, Friends is only
able to conduct one tour of Fly Geyser during the weekend. It will be limited
to 25 people. Friends will be doing a lottery for this event
prior to the tour. Then to the camp
for the Friends of Black Rock annual meeting and dinner provided by
Nevada Outdoor School.
On Sunday, May 25, choose from 5 tour tracks: playa uses, geology,
Emigrant history, High Rock Canyon, or Hot Springs. Then back to the
camp for another dinner, the raffle, 2 bands,
fireworks, and rocket launches. Thanks to Ruby Moutain and Great Basin Breweries for the beer!
WIN 2 tickets to Burning Man in our raffle! Proceeds benefit the
Friends of Black Rock High Rock, with many other great prizes: a 1-hour
flight over the Black Rock Desert, Vegas show tickets, Dinner at
Bruno's, Custom made Jewelry, Cabela's and Patagonia gear, stays at Iveson Ranch, Soldier Meadows Ranch, Surprise Valley Hot Springs, Black Rock Bungalow and others,
framed Steve Chandler Prints, and much more! Go to shopblackrockdesert.org/raffletickets.html for more information and to buy tickets. You do not need to be present to win.
On Monday (Memorial Day), there will be a Nevada Cultural Site Stewardship training session from 9a - 3p at the Gerlach Community Center. Become a site steward to help monitor sensitive
cultural sites. Also, Friends of Black Rock will conduct a
volunteer project at the Coyote Spring dunes, building sections of
buck-and-pole fence to protect sensitive dunes which are being
destroyed by vehicle traffic.
Please contact volunteer coordinator Crow to RSVP or for more information.
If you plan to attend, please RSVP at blackrockrendezvous.com
-- or if you would like to volunteer, please send a note to
volunteer@blackrockdesert.org. All camping is Leave No Trace with most
meals up to you. Porta-potties will be provided. |
Adopt-a-Highway clean-up, May 18, 2008
The Friends of Black Rock / High Rock have "adopted" a 4-mile stretch of Rte. 447, between mile markers 66 and 70, 2 miles either side of Empire, NV. On Sunday, May 18, there will be a clean-up effort with the cooperation of the Washoe County Sheriff's Department. We need volunteers to come help us walk along the road and pick up litter. Come on out and lend a hand-- contact Crow to RSVP. |
Visitor Contact Trailer
The "VCT" is one of Friends' most important projects. We manage this facility for the BLM, and it now sits in Gerlach near the Water Tower Park. We train volunteers to answer questions and distribute information about the Black Rock Desert, the better to educate the public and visitors about the hazards and resources of the region. To volunteer, contact Crow at (775) 557-2900. |
Membership Drive
Membership dues are an important part of how we are able to expand our programs and reach the public. While we are always looking to expand our membership, it is very important that we do so this year. Our goal is to increase from 196 members to 750 by the end of the year. So far this year, 66 people have either joined our renewed their membership. To those new and enduring members, thank you!
If you are not yet a member of FBRHR please go here and become a member today.
If you are already a member, we'd like your help bringing in some new Friends. For every member in good standing who recruits 5 memberships of any type, we would like to offer you a limited edition Friends of Black Rock hooded sweatshirt. These pullover "hoodies" have our logo on the front and a topo map image of Black Rock on the back. They are very popular, but so far only available to special volunteers. Just send the names of your recruited members to info@blackrockdesert.org, and indicate your desired size (M - XXL). We will confirm the new members and send the sweatshirt to you right away. |
| Thank again for your interest and support of this spectacular region.
